Central Asia faces future water wars

Today I prepared a report from the expedition—I visited the water horizons of Central Asia. I explored glaciers, rivers, and places where people are trying to "hold back the water" with artificial barriers. All of this work will serve as the foundation for defining the future boundaries of the Territories of Full Ecological Tranquility (TFET).

I'd like to share a few thoughts with our headquarters.

— We are now witnessing the rapid degradation of glaciers across Central Asia. I saw it with my own eyes, and my understanding has been reinforced by historical scientific data. The glaciers of the Tian Shan and the Pamirs are the natural freshwater reservoirs for tens of millions of people. They are now shrinking, which means the flow of the region's largest rivers is declining. As a result, experts increasingly agree that this will inevitably lead to future water wars across the region.

— In addition, I reviewed several scientific studies on global water resources. It becomes clear that water itself is emerging as one of the world's strategic resources of the 21st century. This increases the risk of political crises and transboundary conflicts over river basins. Major multinational corporations are already betting on clean water by acquiring land containing key aquifers.

— Yet despite FULLY UNDERSTANDING THIS CRISIS, governments and multinational corporations are simultaneously rushing to develop high mountain regions, build infrastructure, and extract mineral resources. At the same time, they continue to drive the destruction of mountain forests—which is absolute madness from the standpoint of basic logic.

I want to emphasize that water scarcity is, above all, the result of the DESTRUCTION OF THE NATURAL MECHANISMS THAT PRODUCE AND REPLENISH WATER.

You might say that perhaps they simply don't understand what they are doing and are acting irrationally. But here's what I keep asking myself: what if they actually intend to INTENSIFY the water crisis in order to monopolize water and ultimately control it? The new gold is clean water. Imagine if the United States and China secured 49-year leases on land containing the region's most critical aquifers. When the crisis reaches its peak, they would control the one resource that tens of millions of people simply cannot live without.

I'll explain these ideas more clearly in future publications.

But in this entire context, the creation of the Territories of Full Ecological Tranquility (TFET), for which all of us are fighting, represents a fundamental path OUT OF THE PLANETARY CRISIS. Specifically for Central Asia, it offers an opportunity to preserve the headwaters of rivers, protect the natural hydrological cycle, and, if TFET becomes a cooperative international system, it could serve as the foundation for preventing transboundary conflicts. In essence, what we are proposing is a preventive strategy: instead of responding to water shortages after they occur, the concept focuses on preventing the crisis itself through the long-term protection of natural ecosystems—the foundation of water security for future generations.
