Expedition notes

Today I prepared a new expedition note after visiting the very irrigation systems that CIS countries are installing on mountain slopes: the entire landscape is covered with metal pipes carrying water to young pine plantations. On the one hand, it certainly looks impressive. Many people see it and say, “Look at how we protect nature. This is where our tax money goes.” But on the other hand, it is an absolutely epic piece of stupidity — that is what I would call it.

I examined the ground — it is cracked and dry, with no water. There is not enough moisture even for native species, let alone rows of conifer seedlings. And the larger these trees grow, the faster they draw the last remaining moisture from the soil.

Just imagine: there is already a severe shortage of water, and groundwater reserves are declining year after year. The natural forest has been destroyed, arid steppes press up against the mountain ranges, and the ecosystems as a whole are degrading. And in the middle of all this, they take fast-growing seedlings of the same type, stick them into the ground in rows across the mountain slopes, and start building this “miracle of engineering,” running metal pipes across the landscape. More and more water will be needed, the land will continue to degrade, and eventually the trees will inevitably die. And the land will be destroyed along with them.

So what exactly is this? Is someone skillfully laundering public money, or are there really no competent specialists capable of setting reasonable objectives? If that is the case, they could at least turn to their Chinese neighbors, who are conducting scientific research on the Tien Shan right nearby.

In any case, I encourage all of my fellow supporters to read this expedition note. These materials and observations will form the basis of proposals to governments on the need to establish Territories of Full Ecological Tranquility (TFET).
