Bear registry with population pressure analytics service launched

A comprehensive interactive service has been launched featuring a registry of quotas issued nationwide for bear hunting. This is a crucial step in our efforts, enabling us to visualize the problem on a large scale and provide people with a tool for continuous analysis. It is particularly useful for environmental organizations and regional media. Now, there is a constant online service at hand where one can see and assess the scale of pressure on the bear population, study regions, and analyze changes over time.

This service is part of a broader initiative to expand independent infrastructure for wildlife protection. Data will be updated annually by hand for each region: we will find official documents—decrees on bear hunting quotas—and enter the information into the registry.

We paid special attention to the design to ensure it is minimalist: no unnecessary texts, clutter, or blocks. Only what is truly important. The interactive map is designed in a color palette from gray to red, changing depending on where the most or fewest bear hunting quotas are issued. Additionally, by clicking on a region, users can see a visualization highlighting the area and displaying information by year: click on a region to see how many bear hunting quotas were issued in recent years and how many are issued now.

For quicker access, the entire registry is also displayed below the map in a separate section—it can simply be opened as a list. This is also very convenient.

In my opinion, the situation is appalling: the bear is a large territorial predator that urgently needs a vast habitat and a stable food base. Moreover, the bear has evolved to avoid humans, and if it starts approaching people, it means there are serious problems within the wild that need to be addressed.

Yet, our "solution" is reduced to the linear shooting of bears, and this year a record number of quotas for their hunting has been set—the authorities have permitted the killing of over 52,000 individuals.
