Is it possible to deliberately provoke conflicts with wild animals?
I am currently studying the scientific research “Hunting promotes spatial reorganization and sexually selected infanticide” concerning bears in Scandinavia. It is an excellent, extensive, and important work based on field studies. Scientifically established facts: bear hunting, that is, linear, blunt killings, directly affects the spatial structure of the population and promotes infanticide.
By the way, here's what I noted: it seems quite likely that systematic manipulations can deliberately cause a spatial disruption in the distribution of the bear population. This means provoking a mass movement of bears towards humans, resulting in conflicts and justifying the need to increase hunting quotas or even abolish any limits. These are just thoughts out loud, of course. I see from scientific research that such manipulations are theoretically possible and apparently feasible. Whether this is done consciously or not—who knows and when will we find out?
But imagine that a well-designed pressure map on the population deliberately provokes the breakdown of the spatial distribution structure of animals and begins to push them towards humans. Like social engineering applied in our society, only more linear, at the level of a biological species driven by instincts and basic needs. I hadn't thought about this so deeply before, although I had suspected it. But now, based on recent scientific research, I can probably say that this is fundamentally possible and on a large scale. Especially since such methods have long been used in the wild: as you know, animals are baited in certain places, gamekeepers drive them under the guns of “trophy tourists,” and so on. The wild in a controlled format is very predictable.
I will prepare a substantial piece on this scientific work with quotes from scientists and an analysis of the applicability of the field study results to bear populations in our country. I am also interested in exploring the topic of managed increases in conflict between humans and wildlife. Have such cases been recorded before? Perhaps there are some testimonies or mentions in scientific works. I think it is important to develop this idea further.
